Originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of the upper face in 2003, Thermage has now been okayed for the full face, neck, arms, abdomen, thighs and eyes. The procedure is generally done as a single treatment. Occasionally a second treatment is desired and performed with 4 to 6 months between the two treatments. Depending on the treatment area, Thermage can take as little as thirty minutes or as long as two hours. After the treatment there is no downtime. You can return quickly to your normal activities. Side effects are generally mild and may include redness and swelling, which usually disappear quickly. There is no special care needed after treatment, but sunscreen is recommended as part of good skin care.

Thermage is completely non-invasive. There’s no surgery and no injections. Some improvement is seen immediately as the treatment tightens your existing collagen. More improvement occurs over the next six months as Thermage stimulates new collagen growth.

Thermage is safe. The procedure uses advanced safety features that monitor and regulate the protective cooling of your skin to prevent burning. To protect your skin and make the treatment more comfortable, a cooling spray is delivered before, during and after each application of the treatment tip.

Body by Thermage

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved the use of Thermage® off the face. Thermage is a treatment that utilizes radiofrequency energy to tighten, contour, and rejuvenate the skin. It was initially FDA-approved to treat wrinkles and skin laxity on the face. Now with the new approval, it can be used on the arms, thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. The procedure is called Body by Thermage™.

Many women have loose, stretched out skin on the abdomen from pregnancies. Even though they may have worked out a lot to lose weight post-partum, the abdominal skin often doesn’t snap back to its pre-childbirth condition. Prior to Thermage, the only answer was a surgical tummy-tuck procedure. Body by Thermage has many advantages over a surgical procedure, such as the lack of a surgical scar, less risk of side effects, speed, and convenience.

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis. No anesthetic is necessary, but if the patient so chooses, an oral pain medication may be taken. The patient feels a heat sensation as the radio frequency energy is being delivered to the treated areas. The average treatment session lasts about two hours, but larger surface areas may take longer.

Another advance in technology is now available, which improves the results of Thermage skin tightening on the body. Thermage utilizes radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin, achieving skin tightening by contraction of existing collagen and stimulation of new collagen production. The new deep tip delivers heat deeper into the skin than the original body Thermage tip. This deeper heating can deliver body contouring in addition to skin tightening. Body Shape by Thermage ™ is ideal for men and women who are not significantly overweight, but are seeking help to firm sagging skin and reduce unwanted bulges that dieting and exercise alone cannot seem to change.

This new deep tip can be used anywhere on the body except the face and neck. Commonly-treated areas include the abdomen, “love handles”, hips, thighs, buttocks and arms. Some results will be seen immediately as the deep contouring tip tightens skin, but improvement continues for up to six months as new collagen forms and will last two years, possibly longer.

Like other Thermage procedures, Body Shape by Thermage is usually done as a single treatment, but can be repeated to achieve more improvement. It doesn’t require a topical anesthetic. The level of heat is adjusted depending upon patient feedback, with the target being a sensation of tolerable heat, but not pain. There is no downtime afterwards, and you can return to your daily activities immediately. Thermage is FDA-approved for the non-invasive treatment of wrinkles and temporary reduction of cellulite, but is not yet cleared for body shaping in the U.S.
